What started as a brief designed to get writers and photographers in our office to collaborate has become a campaign and exhibition with a film, live performance and 23 works of art.

On the anniversary of the riots we’re proud to present FREEDOM – 9th August 6pm onwards @ Art Against Knives’ Boxpark & Stop & Talk a campaign for fairer engagement between young people and the police.

The film : Off Centres film “Pagan” highlights Stop & Search as a key issue effecting young Londoners often trapped between gangs and the police. The LSE and The Guardian’s research Reading the Riots into last years civil unrest supported the importance of tackling the negative effects and misuse of the laws under which police Stop & Search. The campaign website we developed Stop & Talk offers a platform for the film and asks for support to push for fairer engagement between police and young people.

The campaign : Researching organizations tackling Stop & Search led to us to meeting and co leading a collective of organisations including Just For Kids Law, Release & Stop Watch . 16 organisations in total came together to demand suspension of S&S Law Section 60 with and open letter to Theresa May and press release. The exhibition : Presented by Art Against Knives FREEDOM showcases a communities response to the riots, stop and search laws, and ultimately freedom. The work on show is the result of creative collaborations between established photographers and groups of young people we work with. Also featuring work from youth providers themselves.

Who was involved? : D&Ad award winning photographer Niall O’Brien & Glenn Mcmahon explored the idea of freedom with our young creatives from Hackney, combining the ideas and talents of young writers and photographers ; Ondre Roach, Michelle Stannard, Kezia Levitas & Shannique Smith

Poached Creative : conducted interviews on journalism and the riots with Paul Lewis, award-winning Guardian journalist.

Off Centre : Lydia Noura, Nneka Ladipo & Ondre Roach worked to shoot and develop film to the brief of Safety. AG supported by Sweet Combination provided the sound track to film ‘Pagan’ and will performing live on 9th.

Agenda Photography, Lara Swansbury, Gaelle Tavernier, ME! & Katy Dawe  we’re all inspired to produce work too.
